Newborn Care

Feeding Questions?

Newborns have extremely small stomachs and are only able to consume small amounts of breastmilk or baby formula at a time, which means they need to eat frequently. Newborn babies should be fed every 1-3 hours for the first few weeks. When babies are a few weeks old they will want to eat every 2-4 hours.

How Often Should I Burp My Baby?

When babies swallow while feeding, air bubbles can get trapped in their bellies, which can cause gassiness and discomfort. Babies should be burned frequently during and after feeding to help eliminate gas and prevent spitting up.

How Often Should I Bathe My Newborn?

Newborns have delicate skin and should only be bathed between 1-3 times per week. Bathing more frequently can dry out their tender skin. Initially, limit bathing to sponge baths until your little one’s umbilical cord falls off and the area has healed.

When Will My Baby Begin Sleeping through the Night?

Since newborns need to eat every few hours, they will wake several times throughout the night to feed. Around three months of age, or when they weigh 12-13 pounds, many babies will begin sleeping between 6-8 hours at night. A majority of babies are able to sleep through the night by about six months old.

How Can I Soothe My Baby?

There are several things you can do to help your baby relax when feeling fussy or stressed. Gently and lightly massaging your little one can help them more comfortable and relaxed. Soothing sounds can also be relaxing. Try singing softly or reading quietly to your baby. Finally, many newborns feel comforted and secure when swaddled. Our knowledgeable pediatric providers can show you how to properly swaddle your baby.
